LEENA LAHTI

My academic background is a Master’s Degree in education at Helsinki University, and a PhD at Tampere University, Finland, with a focus on Management Development. I also hold a certificate on Leadership Coaching from Georgetown University, Washington DC, U.S.A.

I started my professional career in Finland, with Pohjola Insurance Group, accountable for management development and organizational change processes, later as Executive Director and Managing Director for The International Women’s Management Institute, and The World of Management, Ltd.

A year as Visiting Scholar at Stanford University, California (1990-91), opened my eyes to see leadership from a global perspective. As a result, I sought my way to international institutions, which have been my working environment and source of inspiration since then.

My first and most ground-breaking work experience in an international context was ten years as Senior Advisor on Diversity at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Washington DC. The 3,000 employees of the IMF represented 184 member states: an exceptional diversity of languages, cultures and religions, and ethnic origins. It was a unique learning experience full of tough professional challenges and fascinating insights.

During the following years, I worked as an internal or external advisor on gender and diversity with the European Investment Bank (EIB) in Luxembourg, The African Development Bank (ADB) in Tunis, and a UN agency IFAD in Rome, until returning to Finland in 2011.

Since then, I have been working in my company Axianet, founded in 2006, focusing on writing, speeches, and trustee positions, and enjoying the balance of family life in Finland and international assignments elsewhere.
